Abstract

The study illustrates how event-specific costs for diabetes can be estimated using administrative data (China Health Insurance Research Association data). A total of 331,490 diabetes patients were matched to a control group (based on age, sex, city and insurance type) in mainland China. People with diabetes cost on average USD $1,795(SD 5,468), or 134% more than matched controls, due to extra admissions, increased the length of stay per admission, and greater costs of diabetes-related complications.
