SUMMARY:Health Statistics Refresher
DESCRIPTION:Our Health Statistics Refresher course\, which runs virtually over two half-days\, is for people who have had some practical experience with statistics or some undergraduate statistics training. The course focuses on simple study designs and some common mistakes\, with a range of practical exercises throughout the day. \nThis course focuses on the choice of what statistics to use and interpretation of the output (practicalities of running analyses and the use of software are not covered in this course). \nWho is this course designed for? \nHealthcare professionals (all levels of experience and background are welcome)\, policy makers\, academics and students. \nContent overview \n\ncommon mistakes in study designs and statistical analyses\nsample size\nstatistical significance (p<0.05) and confidence intervals\nnon-parametric versus parametric tests\nthe Normal assumption\nthe basics of causal diagrams\nrandomised controlled trials\nintention-to-treat\npre-post designs (before and after studies)\n\nParticipants are requested to bring their own fully-charged laptop. \nTestimonials \n\nFinally! Someone who explains statistics not just clearly\, but in a non-boring fashion.\nBest training course I have ever done! I have very little training in statistics and was worried some/most would go over my head. This was not the case and I attribute this to the teaching style – Adrian made it very easy to understand\, using real life/tangible examples. Excellent course.\n\n\n\nEnrol now for the upcoming virtual course on 29-30 June 2022 (rescheduled from 1 April 2022)

SUMMARY:Carl Bergstrom Public Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The crisis of human collective decision-making in a social media world\nCarl Bergstrom is a theoretical and evolutionary biologist and a professor at the University of Washington in Seattle\, Washington\, United States. A critic of low-quality or misleading scientific research\, Bergstrom’s work concerns the flow of information through biological and social networks. He is the co-author of a book on misinformation called Calling Bullshit: The Art of Skepticism in a Data-Driven World. \nIn this talk\, Carl looks at what social media and information technology more generally are doing to society. Over the past twenty years\, society has fashioned the web into an information pipeline to satisfy and profit from our evolved desires for novel information and social connection. What happens when the scale of human communication is radically transformed in the span of the generation\, and our mechanisms for creating collective understanding no longer promote the spread of accurate information\, strengthen democracy\, and advance human well-being? \nCarl considers how we ended up here\, and explores some possible suggestions for what we can do about it. \nRegister to join us from 5:00pm for drinks and nibbles before the public lecture at 6:00pm. \nWith thanks to QUT Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Sheil AO for hosting this special event. The free lecture forms part of AIMOS 2023: The fifth annual conference of the Association for Interdisciplinary Metaresearch & Open Science. If you are attending AIMOS\, you do not need to register for this lecture on Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:A/Prof Charitini Stavropoulou Guest Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Who benefits from early career funding: evidence from the Medical Research Council in the UK.\nCharitini Stavropoulou is an Associate Professor in Health Services Research at City University of London. As the co-director of the Centre for Healthcare Innovation Research (CHIR) she is interested in understanding the barriers and facilitators in implementing research and innovation in healthcare practice. \nA/Prof Charitini Stavropoulou will first provide a brief overview of the work CHIR has been doing over the past five years. She will then focus on the work she did while on secondment to the Medical Research Council in the UK\, during which she evaluated the council’s early career schemes. We encourage you to actively participate\, ask questions\, challenge assumptions\, and most importantly\, forge connections that will drive progress in health services research. \n\n\nTheme: HEALTH SERVICES RESEARCH IN THE DIGITAL AGE\n\n\nIn this dynamic era of digital transformation\, our conference serves as a platform for researchers\, practitioners\, thought leaders and policymakers to come together\, exchange ideas\, and delve into the exciting possibilities that digital technology offers to transform health services. We hope to address some of the key challenges: Human computer interaction\, data privacy and security; data quality and reliability; interoperability; AI/machine learning and bias in algorithms; and equitable access to digital healthcare services and resources. Likewise\, we’ll explore the exciting opportunities that the digital age brings: better access and patient engagement; big data and predictive analytics; telehealth; precision medicine; cost efficiency; and global collaboration. \n\n\n\nOver three days we will engage in insightful discussions\, share groundbreaking research\, and collaborate on solutions that will enable us to navigate the challenges and harness the opportunities of HEALTH SERVICES RESEARCH IN THE DIGITAL AGE. \n  \n\n\n\nDon’t miss this unique opportunity to network with peers\, learn from the best minds in the field\, and be a part of shaping the future of healthcare delivery. \n  \n\n\nIf you have any Conference enquiries: please contact the Conference Manager directly via HSR2024@eventstudio.com.au

SUMMARY:Outsmarting scammers in research and publishing: tips from a battle-hardened editor
DESCRIPTION:We live in a world where access to high quality information is at a premium\, yet the challenges of knowing what and who to trust have never been harder. Academic journals are at the forefront of this information war\, and editors have had to become adept at navigating it to ensure their journals’ role as trusted collaborators with academics and trusted sources for readers. \nProfessor Ginny Barbour\, who is currently Editor-in-Chief at the Medical Journal of Australia and has worked across publishing in three continents\, and the Co-Chair of the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA)\, will give an insider’s view on what to beware of and how to thrive in this new Information Age. \nThe public talk will commence at 4pm\, and we invite you to join us for a drinks and nibbles reception afterwards. \nWith thanks to QUT Vice-Chancellor and President\, Professor Margaret Sheil AO\, for hosting this special event. Please note this is an in-person event\, and places are limited. \n \nEvent photo by Ronda Dorsey on Unsplash

SUMMARY:Invitation only: National priority setting meeting - cardiac neurodevelopmental care
DESCRIPTION:Invitation only: National priority setting meeting – cardiac neurodevelopmental care\nAbout the meeting \nThis priority setting meeting aims to bring together key stakeholders\, including consumers\, who work and/or have lived experience in neurodevelopmental care for children with congenital heart disease (CHD). It builds on established networks and partnerships in the CHD LIFE+ program of research and in a range of CHD children and family care settings and contexts. The meeting aims to extend and sustain these collaborative networks beyond the life of the CHD LIFE+ study and into a future. \nThis event is led by the Australian Centre for Health Services Innovation (AusHSI)\, Queensland University of Technology (QUT)\, and Queensland Paediatric Cardiac Service (QPCS)\, Children’s Health Queensland (CHQ). \nImpacts \nThis forum aims to inform future initiatives\, funding\, and delivery of neurodevelopmental care for families and children with CHD. It will provide a platform for consumer advocates and expert input into collaborative priority setting for best practice neurodevelopmental care for children with CHD. \nThe meeting will be co-facilitated with and informed by our strong collaborative partnership with HeartKids\, and the information collected will help shape reporting of the discussion and priorities. Relevant study protocol and ethics approval will be sought to enable these activities to be published. \nRegistration \nThis is an invitation only event. \nContact \nFor more details\, please email us at chdlife-plus@qut.edu.au \n
